“You don’t have to move to live in a better neighborhood”
The City of Spokane slogan inspired AmeriCorps members on Make A Difference Day.
The Spokane Service Team building is located in the East Central Neighborhood. It is a community with high poverty and crime rates and it is exactly where we need to serve. The percentage of families living below poverty in the ECN is 14.3% in comparison to 6.4% in Washington State. Seventy eight percent (78%) of elementary students in this community qualify for free or reduced lunch in comparison to 52% in the city of Spokane.
Over 40 volunteers gathered at the Spokane Service Team office on Saturday, October 25th. Volunteers served at eight different sites to clean-up and revitalize the East Central Community.
The Spokane Service Team hosted a Bar-B-Que with live music to celebrate and reflect. Volunteers shared stories of service and brainstormed simple things that individuals can do to improve a neighborhood. Make a Difference Day was a great start.
